The Most Common Solar System Problems & How to Fix Them
While solar energy is low maintenance, certain issues can affect your system’s performance over time. The most common problems include inverter failures, wiring issues, installation errors, and critter damage.
At Renew Solar Services, we specialize in diagnosing and repairing solar systems to ensure they operate at maximum efficiency. Here’s what you need to know about these common issues and how we fix them.
1. Inverter Failures (The Most Common Problem)
🔴 Problem: Your inverter is the brain of your solar system, converting solar energy into usable electricity. When it fails, your system may produce little to no power.
Common inverter issues:
✔️ Overheating – Poor ventilation can cause shutdowns.
✔️ Component failures – Internal parts wear out over time.
✔️ Faulty software or communication errors – The inverter stops reporting power generation.
✔️ Grid connection problems – Voltage fluctuations cause system errors.
🔧 Solution: Renew Solar Services diagnoses inverter issues and provides:
✔️ System resets & software updates
✔️ Troubleshooting communication errors
✔️ Inverter repairs or full replacements if needed
2. Wiring Issues (Loose, Damaged, or Corroded Connections)
⚡ Problem: Faulty wiring can lead to power loss, system shutdowns, or even electrical hazards.
Common wiring issues:
✔️ Loose connections – Poor installation can cause wires to disconnect over time.
✔️ Corroded or damaged wires – Exposure to weather can degrade wiring.
✔️ Rodent or pest damage – Critters chew through wiring, disrupting power flow.
🔧 Solution: Our team provides:
✔️ Full system inspections to locate damaged wires
✔️ Rewiring and secure connections to prevent future issues
✔️ Protective wiring solutions to keep pests out
3. Installation Errors (Poor Workmanship from Previous Installers)
🏗️ Problem: A bad installation can cause major system failures. If your system was installed incorrectly, you may experience:
✔️ Improper panel placement – Shading or wrong angles reduce energy output.
✔️ Insecure mounting – Panels shift or detach in high winds.
✔️ Faulty electrical connections – Poor wiring leads to power disruptions.
✔️ Roof leaks – Incorrect flashing or penetrations compromise your roof.
🔧 Solution: If your original installer is out of business or provided poor workmanship, Renew Solar Services can:
✔️ Inspect and correct any faulty installations
✔️ Remount panels securely to prevent roof damage
✔️ Fix poor wiring and electrical connections
4. Critter Damage (Rodents, Birds, and Squirrels Chewing Wires)
🦎 Problem: Birds, squirrels, and rodents love nesting under solar panels, often chewing through wiring and causing system failures or fire hazards.
Signs of critter damage:
✔️ Inconsistent power production – Sudden drops in energy output.
✔️ Visible nesting under panels – Birds and squirrels take shelter under panels.
✔️ Burnt or damaged wires – Exposed cables can short-circuit.
🔧 Solution: We provide:
✔️ Critter guard installations to keep pests out.
✔️ Wire repairs and replacements to restore system function.
✔️ Ongoing maintenance to protect your system long-term.
